Inequality and Tax Policy: A Conference in Honor of Shlomo Yitzhaki
May 20, 2026
Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Mt. Scopus
Jerusalem, Israel
The organizing committee invites submissions for a conference honoring the life and scholarly contributions of Professor Shlomo Yitzhaki (1944-2023), a distinguished economist whose work profoundly shaped our understanding of inequality measurement and tax policy design.
The conference will informally begin the evening of May 19, 2026 with Joel Slemrod giving the Bogen Memorial Lecture. All conference participants are invited to attend.
Professor Yitzhaki dedicated his career to addressing some of the most pressing issues in public economics. After earning his Ph.D. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1976, he built a remarkable career that bridged rigorous academic research with practical policy implementation. His tenure at Hebrew University (1977-2023), combined with his work at the World Bank (beginning 1986) and his leadership of Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics (2002-2008), exemplified his commitment to translating economic theory into policies that could improve lives.
As a world-class expert in tax system design, Professor Yitzhaki consulted with governments of developing nations around the globe. His chairmanship of the 2008 Yitzhaki Committee examining poverty in Israel demonstrated his lifelong dedication to understanding and combating economic inequality. His contributions to inequality measurement, optimal taxation, and the analysis of redistributive policies continue to influence researchers and policymakers worldwide.
This conference aims to advance the scholarly agenda that Professor Yitzhaki championed throughout his career. We seek papers that examine the complex relationships between inequality, taxation, and economic policy, particularly those with practical policy relevance.
We welcome submissions on all aspects of inequality and tax policy, including but not limited to:
There are no fees for the conference and Hebrew University will provide hotel accommodation for all speakers. Participants will be expected to cover their own travel costs.
